2026 Quilt Descriptions

Category 1: 1 Maker - Pieced X-Large

101 Tranquil Waters, Paula Newquist

I love having calming colors in my bedroom. Teals and turquoises fit the bill. Foundation paper pieced. Custom free motion quilting on sit-down machine.

102 Midnight Beauty, Pat Vittitow

This is a striking quilt with bright ombre fabrics on a black background. This was a class taught by Rhoda Johnson at Southern Charm Quilting.

103 Starfish Jungle Magnolia, Linda Snellgrove

Short Description: Technique of the Month pattern, Jungle Magnolia, by Quiltworx.

Long Description: This is a Technique of the Month pattern developed by Quiltworx, and colored by Quiltworx.  I taught this class at Sweet Home Quilting in 2025 and used this colorway as my sample throughout the class.  I love the way the colors pop against the dark background.

104 Piecemakers Sampler, Carolyn Baxter

This is a sampler quilt made with six-inch pieced blocks on point, and three and a half inches inch blocks set in a chain. I made it as a sample for Southern Charm Quilting for a block of the quarter program.

105 A Quilt of Firsts, Kathryn Teare

Pieced quilt with appliqué of owls and flowers in center. This quilt introduced me to many new skills: foundation paper piecing, applique, quilt as you go, and machine quilting.  I saw the pattern book in a quilt shop several years ago and finally decided to jump in and give it a try.  In retrospect, I wish I would have had it professionally quilted by a long armer or quilted it by hand.  It is still one of my favorite quilts that I have made!

106 Goose tracks, Patty Wilson

Modern flying geese.  Just a fun quilt with Cherrywood fabrics. I made a similar quilt in the beginning of my quilting journey. It is worn out from years of love. This is a modern improvised take on that.

107 Fade to Grey, Rhoda Johnson

Shades of gray that ombre back-and-forth with fussy cut animals in the middle of the squares.  A beautiful hombre of grays with fussy cut animals such as wolves, puffins, leopards and more. All free motion quilted, no computer, using some rulers by Rhoda Johnson.

108 Teal Time, Evelyn Spaulding

My inspiration was a 2025 BOM by The Quilt Show. During bad weather, I restarted knowing I would need to make up 5" blocks.

109 Floral Felicity, Deborah Zwiener

Curved pieces made with the Wondercurve ruler. This design of unique flowers is made with the Sew Kind of Wonderful’s wonder curve ruler.

110 Blue Lily, Stephanie Parisi

Bargello quilt made from 20 different fabrics. 18 different Batik fabrics in teals, blues and cream to represent the ocean.  Quilted with a wave design showing the movement of water.

111 Merry Patti Christmas, Lesa Brahm

Christmas fabrics in 2 traditional blocks, "54-40 or Fight" and "Shoo-Fly", with applique flowers and vines in the border. Quilts with secondary patterns fascinate me. When I got a bag of Christmas fabric scraps from my friend Patti, I added scraps from my own stash, plus some yardage for the borders, to create this quilt. The traditional "54-40 or Fight" and "Shoo-Fly" blocks combine to create a secondary circular effect, even though there is no curved piecing. I added the applique borders to create a soft frame around the strong geometric design.

112 My Quilting Flower Garden, Georgia Flanagan

Short Description: I used many Tilda fabrics to make it my own, from pattern by Floral Felicity, Sew Kind of Wonderful. Took 18 months to make.

Long Description: N/A

113 2018 Colorado Shop Hop, DeeDee Morton

Short Description: Original fabric was commissioned only for the Shop Hop. Minimal quilting emphasizes the fabric. I added setting triangles and borders to make it larger.

Long Description: The fabrics are one of a kind, only available during the Shop Hop year and stores choose which fabrics they would carry. That is why some fabrics are used more than others. The store near to me had the Aspen fabrics.  The design called for it to be squared up to 72 inches square, I wanted it larger and didn't want to waste any of the unique fabric so I added setting triangles and borders.  I had to work with the fabric I bought in 2018 since it is no longer available. I added blender Batiks (blue and green) to accent the Colorado batiks.  The result is a scrappy border as I used the fabrics I had.

Category 2: 2 Maker - Pieced X-Large

201 Sunrise on the Shore, Lewis Harmon

I used a combination of Quiltworx patterns - Lakeshore Hosta and Fire Island Hosta - to create this quilt. I started out with the Lakeshore Hosta pattern but did not like the flying geese section. I found the spikey group from Fire Island Hosta Queen fit perfectly in its place. I liked how the bright yellow spikes turned out. That’s why “Sunrise” is in the title.

202 El Camino Real, Pat Kidd

Pattern was inspired by early California history - the Franciscan missions along the El Camino Real highway.

203 Nebula, Linda Snellgrove

This was a Block of the Month quilt in 2023 designed by Julie Harmon for JayBird Quilts in 2023, which I taught at Sweet Home Quilting and Supplies.  I fell in love with the gradation of colors she presented as well as the designs of the individual blocks. The fabrics are all Tula Pink. The backing is one of my favorites!!

204 Bentley’s Stars, Sharon Cheyne

I made this quilt for one of my grandsons, Bentley. He loves blue and he especially loves stars. I have made quilts that have been hand-quilted for all my grandchildren and plan to give them to each one on their wedding day.

205 Maine in Bloom, Kathryn Teare

Seed Packet quilt made with pink and yellow fabrics. I have always loved a seed packet quilt! The colors in this one remind me of the peonies in bloom near our summer home in York, Maine. I added an inner border to highlight the change in size of the fussy cut flowers.

206 2023 Temperature Quilt for Huntsville, Alabama, Jean Clement

My sisters and I have yearly quilt Challenges. Our 2024 Challenge was a 2023 temperature quilt. We  chose our own temperature scale, pattern and fabrics. I have five sisters and we all make quilts to some degree. For the past several years we have gotten together for a family (sisters plus mother) quilt retreat. We have one or two quilt challenges to be completed at each retreat. One of our 2024 challenges was a temperature quilt for 2023. We just had to have the top completed and we could use any block we wanted. We also determined what temperature scale and fabrics we wanted to use. We had two quilts for Huntsville, Alabama; two for Marion, Arkansas and one for Ridgecrest, California (in the Mojave Desert). The sister from the desert had to go up to 120 degrees on her temperature scale whereas the rest of us just went to above 100 degrees. It was interesting to see the differences in the quilts.

207 Grassy Creek, Sam Swieszcz

Golds, oranges, reds, and greens sparkle against the neutral string blocks. Lots of scrappy goodness!

208 Fly Away, Jerry Alexandria

I love making flying geese. There are 672 flying geese in this quilt.

209 Pride and Prejudice, Cindy McAlister

I love Fig Tree fabrics. They are so pretty and beautiful. This was a Mystery Quilt in 2015.  It was everything quilting is all about.  Fun times with friends.

210 Chocolate and Berries, Teresa Covington

Fun project made in colors that complement the paint color in one of the bedrooms in my house.

211 Designer Mystery 2022, Linda Lee

Soft blue, green and cream quilt created from various designers from Fat Quarter Shop. Designer Mystery Quilt 2022 Block of the Month from Fat Quarter Shop. Each block was designed by a different designer from various fabric manufacturers, such as Riley Blake, Moda and Art Gallery. The fabric line is Nantucket Summer designed by Camille Roskelly for Moda Fabrics. This fabric line was so popular it was brought back this year.

212 Twilight Meadow, Cyndi Russell

Curvilinear primary and secondary designs depict the years I spent riding and caring for horses in my teens. The colors post sunset meant come home! Horsing around in the paddock at twilight was a favorite time in my teens. I reveled in the softer colors as the sun faded from the sky accompanied by the smell of flowers, hay, earth and sweat. As the blocks in this quilt went on my wall, I was struck by the strength of the secondary designs in Jen Kingwell’s pattern. I changed the count and placement of blocks to lean into these shapes. I switched the plain Log Cabin blocks to curved Log Cabins. I used color values to accent beautiful fan shapes and large neutral petals. Patty Wilson created quilt designs that accentuated these features. A scalloped border mirroring the curves in outer blocks framed this one-of-a-kind interpretation of Jen Kingwell’s inspiring design.

213 The American Flag, Rhoda Johnson

This is a proportional American flag with eight-point stars all around. It also has red, white and blue borders on the top of the bottom. It is completely free motion quilted by Rhoda Johnson. It was all pieced. by Rhoda Johnson. My friend Linda Schwartzbauer is the one that cut out all the pieces for me.

214 Oh My Stars!, Barbara Black

Lone Stars set in a field of small stars with complex piecing and detailed custom machine quilting. Bright colors sparkle in a clear white background. Bright colors from years of collecting make these Lone Star blocks shine. Strip piecing creates the large stars, a variety of methods create the many small stars in the sashing. A pieced border finishes off the bed-size quilt. Detailed custom quilting with many thread changes enhances the finished quilt.

215 Japanese Full Circle, Lisa Craven

Unique take on Full Circle using authentic Japanese indigo and silk fabrics. I have long been interested in Japanese indigo fabrics, and when we moved there in 2018 I had the opportunity to collect many antique kimonos and yukata, not only in indigo, but also shibori and silk. We returned from Japan during the pandemic in late 2020. In 2023, I was excited to take the Full Circle class under the expert tutelage of Huntsville's own Barbara Black. The complexity of the circular design intrigued me, and Barbara did a super job of teaching the class. While the fabric selection at first was daunting, I was surprised by how quickly it came together and how I was able to incorporate many of my collected fabrics.  I was also able to utilize some wool applique using Sue Spargo's embroidery tips.  I love how the quilt turned out, and more importantly, how I grew my skills as a quilter.

216 The Quilted Snowmen, Mary Ann Matson

A very warm (double batting) and heavy quilt that I made for my daughter Sarah. I saw this kit on sale and I'm not one to pass on a great bargain . So I enabled a good friend, who will remain nameless, to do it with me. This quilt was a blast to make. While working on it at a retreat I enabled a few more friends to purchase this one!  Lori Holts designs always put a smile on my face!!!!

217 Sparklers, Judy Ballance

This is a foundation paper pieced quilt. Several modifications were made on the pattern, including adding striped flanges around several of the circles.

218 London Calling, Eileen Whaley

Experience a tour of London’s majestic landmarks -- from parks to the majestic Buckingham Palace -- through the eyes of a quilter. London Calling is a journey through London’s landmarks.  The fabrics used are from Lewis & Irene and Gudrun Erla's London Calling Collection. The pattern was designed by Gudrun Erla of GE Designs. Some of the representations are the Crown, the Union Jack and a call box , which are distinctively British. Seen are the Throne Room at Buckingham Palace sandwiched by the Guard Booths manned by the King’s Guard. Take a short walk and view the distinctive flooring in Westminster Abbey. Off in the distance is the London Eye (Ferris wheel). Imagine strolling past an English Pub, through the Covent Gardens, and Harrods Department Store. Visions of Harry Potter may come to mind. Board a double-decker bus and drive past Big Ben and onto the Tower Bridge. Maybe take the London Underground to Trafalgar Square or to one of the many parks and gardens throughout London. In the Spring, enjoy the beauty of the liberty flowers (tulips) that can be seen in many of the parks.

219 Desert Star, Connie Beveridge

Though it looks like there are not two designs the same in the quilt, it is an illusion. There are 6 total patterns, but changing the color placement gives each pattern a whole new look! Paper piecing each block was a fun adventure using all of the beautiful hand dyed fabric.

220 On the Sunny Side of Life, Jill Johnson

I made this quilt to mark my retirement from accounting in July 2024 and to celebrate 31 years of marriage. The quilt was finished in 12/2024.  Gingham Foundry is the fabric line that I used.

221 Wild Geese Flying, Vangie Patrick

Center of the quilt was a class to learn how to do rounded corners. I decided to use it as a center for a quilt. I designed the rest of the quilt/borders. The next 2 borders are paper pieced. The last border is done as piano keys.

222 Estella, Dianne Pansing

Pinks, reds, grays and creams make up Estella. The pattern really shows up well when hanging. I added a Seminole border and corner stars. Estella is made up of Chafarcani French General fabrics. The reds, creams, grays, and pinks make up a nice pattern. I added a Seminole border and corner stars to complement the design.

223 Moda Blockheads 4, Pam Dean

A large quilt made with red, grey and mint green 3 Sisters fabric and a grey Irish chain setting and a light grey floral border.

224 Crystal Prism, Jean Snowbarger

Very colorful kaleidoscope or stained-glass look. This was a pre-cut fabric kit.

Category 3: 1 Maker – Pieced Large

301 A Visit from Santa, Georgia Flanagan

I have always enjoyed collecting Santas. Loved the pattern. It was a bit of a challenge. Santa went together like a jigsaw puzzle. Tilda pattern "Dear Santa" was such a fun quilt to make.

302 To Infinity and Beyond, Paula Newquist

I chose my own fabrics for this fun paper pieced quilt. Custom free motion quilting on my HQ Sweet 16 sit down.

303 Queen of Diamonds, Judy Ballance

The quilt was hand pieced using English Paper Piecing (EPP), with the exception of the sashing and borders.

304 Tennessee Waltz, Patricia Vittitow

I saw this pattern on Facebook (scrappy) and really loved it. I wasn't familiar with it, but found it online and started on it!

Category 400: 2 Maker – Pieced Large

401 “A Tisket, A Tasket, A Whole Lot of Baskets,” April Goss

A pattern focused on creating intricate, classic basket blocks. Blending tradition with timeless elegance to create a beautiful quilt with a touch of nostalgia. This quilt was inspired by my love of baskets. I have long been intrigued by the artwork and expertise of the weaving, shapes, and forms of baskets. I have many differnent types of baskets in my house, so this quilt was a natural for me to make. I have especially fond memories of playing "A-Tisket, A-Tasket" as a little girl and my late mother singing the song to me.

402 Floral Pixelation, Melody Janssen

The design is a pixelated vase of lovely flowers against a soft blue background. The striking pixelated flower vase pattern was designed by Tilda with needlepoint as the inspiration. All 2,268 squares are 2” using 44 different solid fabrics. The teal background is also pieced as individual squares rather than strips, to continue the look of an embroidered piece.

403 Indigo Flower Garden - Courtyard, Lorrie Brown

Block of the Month called Courtyard. It features a Kaye England pattern using Wilmington fabrics designed by Kaye England. It took almost 2 years for me to construct . It is quilted by Danny Reese. He used an overall pantograph design.

404 Grandmother’s Spools, Jill Johnson

Quilt made in memory of my Great Grandmother, Isabelle Davidson and Great Aunt, Elizabeth Harmon,  who were quilters from Joliet, Illinois. I still have the quilts that they made our family , which are now over 60 years old. I enjoyed using ‘30s prints for the first time and I enjoyed the special sewing notions quilt design. Completed 08/2025.

405 Jewels of the Kingdom, Sam Swieszcz

A medallion quilt exercise in beautiful Batiks.

406 Happy Anniversary #47!, Sharon Cheyne

I made this quilt for my husband and biggest quilting fan Bob, for our October 6, 2025, 47th anniversary. He’s my biggest fan and supporter of my quilting.

407 Jack’s Quilt , Beverly Kyser

Jack Kelley made this quilt while learning to sew with his Grammy, Beverly Keyser. Jack sewed all of the blocks. Beverly added the sashing and borders. Red is his favorite color. He chose the fabrics and arranged the blocks where he wanted them. Jack was ten when he finished his blocks. The quilt took them 4 years to complete.

408 Everything But the Kitchen Sink, Lorrie Brown

This vintage looking quilt is made using reproduction '30s fabrics. It is pieced alternating 9-patch and star blocks with an on-point orientation. I started this quilt at 3 Hens and a Chick Quilt Shop in a class taught by Brenda Willis. I used a variety of reproduction ‘30s fabrics from my own collection. I pieced the alternating 9-patch and star blocks on point with a white background fabric. The final border is scrappy and I am putting a green binding on it to complete the quilt.

409 Temperature Quilt 2025, Cathy Logan

I used Flying Geese pieces to construct the various days colors.  I kept track of the weather every day and kept a temperature chart for the year to make this quilt.

410 Michigan Cocoa Pink, Cathy Patterson

Dedicated to my Mom, Mona Slaven Offenbecher, who inspires my quilting journey. This endeavor was ambitious, having begun quilting in April 2023. I had never attempted many of the blocks from this Laundry Basket Quilts 2021 Mystery Quilt Pattern, but with Mom’s encouragement and sage wisdom, I was able to complete the piecing. I wanted something truly special, so I asked Patty Wilson to add her artistic quilting to make it complete.

411 Old City Gates, Pat Kidd

This is a Civil War-inspired quilt.

412 Starry Skies, Pamela  Ver Planck

Star in a Square block with an Irish Chain. Beautiful  floral, blue and yellow stars in a square with Irish Chain throughout.

413 Calico Birds, Dianne Pansing

Flowers, birds and a bird bath comprise this design. The background fabric is very directional with words. I added small buttons for the birds eyes so they can see what’s going on!

414 Frolic No Más, Donna Daniel

I started this quilt as my first Bonnie Hunter Mystery Quilt and then it sat on a shelf for 4 years.  I finally decided to tackle it and get it done.  I did modify the border by using simple strips instead of two rounds of half square triangles that the pattern called for.  I discovered that I would much rather see a pattern in its entirety as opposed to the "monthly mystery.”

415 Christmas Love, Pam Dean

Beautiful Christmas quilt using reds, green and grey Christmas Morning fabrics by Lella Boutique. I loved the red border that framed and completed the quilt. I really enjoyed making this quilt.

416 Queen of Diamonds, Karen Leicht

The quilt is hand pieced using fussy cuts and templates. I purchased this kit because I had not done any hand piecing since I was a young girl. It served as a walk through memories. My Grandmother Adams was a fantastic needleworker as well as crocheter and tatter. She would sit for hours making things embellished with tatting.  She made wonderful stitches of plain fabric as embellishment. She taught me to do the hexie without a template and how to sew it together. The quilt serves to rekindle those old skills.

417 Forever USA, Cyndi Russell

Mom loved wildflower stamps. These Rifle Paper botanical prints and Alison Glass Stamp Stripe represent the First Class country Mom and I love. First Class. Forever USA. Stamps are an important part of America’s history. The letters we sent across the country and around the world kept families and friends together for centuries. My mom was a letter writer and she loved beautiful stamps. I chose botanical prints for my stamp quilt in her memory. The flying geese sashings represent the continuing travel of messages between readers and writers. Wavy quilting denotes franked cancelation marks. The words in the border represent the kind of American I was raised to be:  Patient and kind. Indivisible. With liberty and justice for all.

Category 500: 1 Maker - Pieced Medium

501 There’s a Party Going On Here, Deanna Plotts

Fun vertical row quilt made with all my favorite fabrics. Had fun using different techniques including, make new fabric from small scraps, improve wavy strips, piec-lique, improve triangles and paper piecing. After piecing the top, I got creative with quilting so that each section is different.

502 Family Memories, Paula Newquist

SIlk fabrics from family ties, dresses and other scraps bring memories. Four corners represent places we have been. Custom quilting with silk threads.

503 Get Kraken!, Elaine Poplin

I have a weird thing about octopuses (yes, that’s the plural form of octopus) and HAD to make this quilt. I didn’t want to use the Kona Cottons that Legit Kits uses for their kits, so I color matched and built my own kit with Cherrywood Fabrics. The level of organization required to make a quilt with this many unique pieces was bonkers, but I had a great time. And now my kids are fighting over it.

504 Candy Corn Cravings, Janice Hoffman

Quilt celebrates my favorite Halloween Candy! This is the second one I have made. The first went to my daughter. I am making a third and will be giving it to my sister, who shares the same craving!

505 Poppy Fields Forever, Marianne Case

The wild and vibrant colors in this pattern inspired me to attempt this quilt! Made my first Flying Geese in large numbers! I love it! I Purchased this pattern and kit for its vibrant colors on my first trip to the Paducah, Kentucky,  Quilt Show a good number of years ago! It was fun to finally make it and with plenty of extra fabric I made it a little larger than pattern called for. I have never made so many Flying Geese and those turned out well.   It has been a challenging and pleasant experience putting this quilt together.

506 The Hunter’s Christmas Star, Jerry Alexandria

I love the Hunter's Star and used Christmas fabric for the design. Began in 2018 but never finished until 2024.

507 American Heartland Remix, Corrie Wikoff

Muted florals make for a soft take on these classic blocks that were completed as part of a Sew Along Challenge.

508 Serenity, Tammy Replogle

A wall hanging depicting our trip to Denali National Park and Mt. McKinley using Alaskan commissioned fabrics. Total peaceful serenity.  While on our trip to Alaska, we discovered a delightful quilt shop, Quilt Alaska. They displayed this quilt panel of a bald Eagle soaring in front of Mt. McKinley, part of Denali National Park. The quilt show put together a kit using the panel and Batiks, where were commissioned for the Alaska quilt shops. Great memories of a wonderful vacation.

509 Moda Blockheads ala Suzanne, Suzanne Beckinger

Stitchers Group Challenge 2021: Moda Blockheads were assigned (two blocks a month) for a year. My blocks were made in various sizes. Arranging them proved tricky. I added three borders and used the leftover fabrics on the back, resulting in a pieced back--a reversible quilt! My quandary was how to quilt it. I finally decided to free-motion quilt it a block at a time, just like I made it.

510 Twirling Geese, Stephanie Parisi

Twirl is a paper pieced pattern with applique. Created in black and white fabrics with shades of purple grunge.

Category 600:  2 Maker – Pieced Medium

601 54-40 or Fight Freestyle, Sam Swieszcz

Red, White, & Blue and curvy all over. I was looking for a pattern to use up the 4 patch and half square triangle blocks that I had already sewn. My blocks are built with 2" squares while the pattern called for 2.5" squares. I simply edited the size of my "54-40" star tail blocks to make this pattern work for me. I love the illusion of curves in this quilt.

602 Elephant Quilt, Teresa Covington

A fun paper-pieced quilt to make. Hangs in our den during football season.

603 Where I Come From, Donna Daniel

I began this quilt in 2021 as it was The Quilt Show's BOM. I changed the four corners in the quilt pattern to be more representative of my hometown, my state and my country. The Saturn V pattern was created by Patches & Stitches, my LCS. I designed the patterns for the other three corners. The biggest challenge was sewing the circular seams.  I was glad to have the support and input of my sewing group, the Sunday Sew and Sews.

604 15 Seconds Tall Christmas Tree, Quilt, Maureen Griffin

Modern Christmas Tree Wall Quilt using Batiks. I wanted to learn Foundation Paper Piecing and took a class.

605 Kaffe’s Vintage Rose, Linda Snellgrove

This is a foundation paper pieced quilt pattern by Quiltworx. The colorway was designed by Tennessee Quilts. The richness of the colors drew me in so that I had to look again and again! These fabrics are such happy fabrics that it is a joy to work with.

606 Christmas Chandelier, Kathryn Teare

This Christmas Chandelier quilt was pieced with various Christmas fabrics I had in my sewing room and brought to life with long arm quilting by Danny Reese. It will be sold to raise money for Chapter Z of P. E.O., a philanthropic organization that provides scholarships and loans to deserving women who want to further their education.

607 Atlanta Shop Hop, Cheryl Heeth

When I was in Atlanta  one spring day  I joined in on the fun of a shop hop and received this pattern at the end. The quilt caught my eye as the blocks went in different directions.

608 She Plays With Her Heart, Cathy Logan

I made this quilt for my granddaughter who loves playing the piano.  I used various blacks and whites to create the piano.

609 Come Fly With Me, Barbara Barnett

Black background with a rainbow of paper pieced “origami” cranes, Flying Geese and half-square triangle borders. I love origami and have made a plethora of paper cranes, so of course I had to have this pattern which I sat on for 5 years! The day came, I bit the bullet and here is my magnificent tribute to origami in two dimensional fabric. I could not be happier thanks to Patty Wilson’s terrific quilting.

610 Valley Ranch, Pam Dean

Scrappy quilt of vibrant colors and multiple design blocks with an unusual border.

611 Spools, Dianne Pansing

Figtree fabrics were used to make a scrappy collection of spools. The quilting continues the theme using variegated thread. Square-in-a-Squares on the diagonal make up the border.

612 Wow!, Pam Anders

A foundation-pieced  butterfly sitting on a cone flower. Contains 115 different solid-colored fabrics and made of 2,800 pieces. This quilt was quite the challenge and organization was key. It was a challenge to stay focused and complete this difficult project. I worked a solid 6 months on this complex and beautiful quilt.

613 Tribute to Patience, Patti Osment

Five-inch pieced blocks are out of my comfort zone so I procrastinated finishing this quilt started in 2022 at a Patches and Stitches class.

614 You don’t get any leaves unless you stick your neck out, Montana O’Shields

The foundation paper pieced quilt is made with large-scaled blocks, and added original hand painted and thread stitched leaves with some being three-D.

Category 700: 1 Maker - Pieced Small

701 You Are My Sunshine, Paula Newquist

Sun compass was strip pieced using the Fat Robin Ruler, machine piecing, raw edge applique, free motion quilting on Sweet 16 sit-down.

702 Pleiades, Elaine Poplin

I had lots of skinny scraps of Cherrywood fabrics and wanted to see how they’d work together if I didn’t try to make transitions smooth. After I made the squares I decided to try cutting them into rectangles, and found that it made the design even more dynamic.

703 Colorful Courthouse, Amy Schwalm

Quilt design is a variation on a traditional Log Cabin Courthouse Steps block, hence the name. It was started in class taught by Flavin Glover that covered multiple log cabin block variations.

704 All that Glitters, Patty Wilson

Feather star with crystals. Ever since visiting a quilt show in Puyallup, Washington, back in 2006, I've wanted to have my own blingy quilt. I found this hand dyed fabric at a craft show and knew exactly what I would do with it.

705 Nemesis, Ellen Eade

Squares + Triangles+ Rectangles = Circle. Two colors plus black and white with any shades or tints. Sewn entirely on an old Singer Featherweight. This wall quilt originated from a guild challenge. Participants blindly selected two crayons from a brown paper bag. Those two colors plus black and white with any shades or tints only were used in any pattern of the maker's choice. This was my first attempt at paper piecing. Who knew that an old spool of "invisible" nylon thread had many more recent iterations making use much easier or that there was no need to use invisible thread in the bottom. Not me.

Category 800: 2 Maker - Pieced Small

801 Soft Morning Rise, Corrie Wikoff

This quilt features a modern, minimalist design with a soft neutral background and scattered geometric accents. Subtle horizontal strip piecing is paired with simple triangles and rectangles in muted peach, mustard, and sage tones, creating a calm, contemporary feel with gentle movement and balance.

802 Loon Lake, Patti Osment

The vibrant colors remind me of watching loons on the lake in New Hampshire. The pattern looks completely different with this choice of colors.

803 Collage quilt, Cathy Logan

Collage quilt made in a class.  Used lots of sewing themed fabrics.

804 Jujube Candy, Sam Swieszcz

White Stained Glass looks like Jujube Candy. I love tiny pieces! These scraps came from another Batik quilt project. The fabrics were so vibrant that I couldn't toss even the tiniest scrap. The individual blocks were built as a leader/ender project while working on something else. Inspired by the MSQC pattern Sashed Half Hexi. I reduced the pattern down to tiny 2.5" half hexagon blocks.

805 Landscape for Lando, Trudy Everson

Landscape for Lando was inspired by the country of El Salvador. His paternal relatives are from there and I celebrated his birth by creating this on of a kind volcano landscape. El Salvador is known as the “Land of Volcanoes “with over 100 with 20-23 considered potential active.

806 Butterfly Reborn, John Pritchard

50" round quilt with 10-degree wedges cut from strip sets. The butterfly body is cut from strip sets and appliqued on. The antenna are small tubes appliqued to the quilt. The pattern was from a soft back book by Cheryl Phillips titled "Quilts in the Round."

807 My Happiness 1.0, Trish Harmon

Made during a Jacqueline de Jonge workshop. Machine pieced. Patty Wilson quilted it. I added the embellishments.

808 I’m A Piecer, Pam Anders

A fun wallhanging, made with classic blocks, to form a sewing machine. I made this for my sewing room, my happy place.

Category 900: 1 Maker - Appliqué/Mixed Medium, Large, X-Large

901 Everything Christmas 2025, Joan Bloomberg

Red, Green and White as snow, this quilt brings the happy in Christmas. Raw-edge applique with machine blanket stitch, hand embroidery, and pieced blocks. this quilt is a BOM (block of the month) from Annie's 2023. I began the quilt in 2025 enjoying one block at a time. There are a few extra's I added just for "my" Christmas pleasure.

902 Amazing Grace, Kari Hawkins

Loved the pattern but not the pattern designer's fabrics. When I saw it made in Kaffe fabrics, I knew that was the quilt for me! The pattern for this quilt came with very little directions. I studied it and used several different techniques to complete the blocks. When it was complete, I studied similar quilts online to get ideas for the quilting. I love the vibrancy that the Kaffe fabrics bring to the pattern, especially in the flowers. But, instead of using a Kaffe fabric for the border background I went with a teal that includes the words of the hymn "Amazing Grace." That was a good choice for three reasons -- one, Amazing Grace is a wonderful and well-known hymn that speaks to my faith; two, Amazing Grace was my late mother-in-law's favorite hymn and she was also a quilter who encouraged me in my quilting; and, three, I need a lot of grace for the errors I made in the creation of this quilt!

903 Will It Go Round, Ben Darby

I started this quilt in a week-long class taught by Barbara Black. The pattern is by Wendy Williams and is called Full Circle. While I rarely make quilts from patterns, I felt this class would introduce me to some new techniques and at the same time allow me to experience Barbara's excellent teaching.

904 Paradise of Birds, Paula Newquist

I had so much fun choosing fabrics, mostly Kaffe Fassett collections, for this project, and working on it while traveling and at local stitch groups. After all the hand applique I used my sit down HQ Sweet 16 to custom free motion quilt the top.

905 My Whimsical Garden, Pat Kidd

This quilt has whimsical birds and flowers that are hand appliqued.

906 Sweet Autumn, Cindy McAlister

I enjoyed making an autumn quilt with all the rich colors of fall.

1001 Asian Flutter Fly, Vangie Patrick

Took a class to learn how to piece the butterfly. My husband Allen had bought MANY pieces of Asian fabrics when we visited New York. I incorporated these into my quilt with other coordinating fabrics. I added the design of my own borders. Cheryl Johnson did an amazing job of quilting and binding for a finished quilt.

1002 Mandalas Gone Wild, Judy Ballance

This is a mandala quilt that is machine appliquéd. It is great fun picking out the fabrics for the mandalas and the flying geese. This quilt uses a new technique that is a cross between EPP and appliqué.

1003 Chicken coop, Patti Osment

I love chickens and enjoyed giving these girls and guys colorful personalities. Machine appliqued, machine pieced and hand embroidered.

1004 Natures Garden, Connie Beveridge

The beautiful summer colors, flowers, birds and insects drew me to this pattern. It was challenging and interesting and absolutely delightful to create.

1005 Lin’s Cherry Tree, Lin Hayden

As soon as this top was shown on Sentimental Stitches, I knew I had to make it. It took longer than imagined to complete it. Beyond the Cherry Tree has been such a fun top to applique. It was started in 2002 and been almost around the world, as I traveled to visit granddaughters. I'm so pleased with Gayle Bonners sharing this pattern.

1006 Bee Happy, Mary Ann Matson

Needle-turned appliqué done by hand and sewing machine. My very first appliqué quilt. Bee Happy was truly a joy for me to make.  It was my first attempt at appliqué that I took a class to learn different applique techniques. It took me almost 2 years to complete it but my journey taught me so much! But most of all it gave me the courage to applique! Now I too can make some pretties!!

1007 You Could Have Been A Flower, Barbara Barnett

Neutral pieced background with colorful raw edge appliqué flowers growing up the length of the quilt. The Temptations song “The Way You Do The Things You Do” is exactly what my mother believed about me and I hope I have done the same for my daughter. Indeed, my Allison is a flower and anything else her heart desires.

1008 A Nutcracker Suite, Linda Lee

A Christmas quilt with five unique nutcrackers raw edge appliquéd on an Irish Chain background.

1009 Garden Party Down Under, Julie Anderson

My first applique quilt. I gained more confidence in my fabric and color decisions with each block.

1010 Morning Glory, Karen Measels

William Morris fabrics are one of my favorites to use to sew. I have a large collection of them and am always looking for new patterns to use them with. This pattern gave me the opportunity to use many fabrics. The fabrics always seem not to go together well, but when finished the fabrics did play well together!

1101 Friendship Quilt, Karen Measels

I combined two patterns plus some original blocks to make five of these quilts and gave them to friends I've had for over 65 years. I attend a retreat in Dallas every year with 4 friends from grade school, high school, and college. My gift to them last year was this quilt. One block has the letters of our high school and the girl is standing on our high school annual. The sayings came from Pinterest.

1102 Black and White Harmony, Linda Snellgrove

Rachelle Denneny uses a modified turn-edge applique method to create these Mandala shapes in her pattern. Judy Ballance taught a class at Sweet Home last winter and I was intrigued by the method and how beautiful they turned out. I chose to use a black and white palette to be a bit different. No one else in the class chose to use black and white. I am very pleased with how it turned out.

1103 Fun, Evelyn Spaulding

Fun was a Block-of-the-Month at Sweet Home Quilting using a pattern by Wendy Williams. I just played, having fun trying different things.

1104 Pumpkins and Haystacks, Eileen Whaley

Pattern is by Lori Holt. The top and binding are from Lori Holt's Autumn collection for Riley Blake. The pumpkins and leaves are machine appliqué. Pumpkins and Haystacks is an autumn themed quilt with pumpkins nestled between haystacks in a field of quilted ground cover. The fabrics are the essence of autumn with fiery oranges, reds, greens, browns, tans, and yellows. The fabric strips within each of the blocks provides a visual effect that resembles haystacks when multiple blocks are assembled into a quilt top. All of which uses the Autumn themed colors to surround the pumpkins.

1201 Rusty Tiles, Ben Darby

I made this quilt for the 2026 QuiltCon Windham Artisan Cotton fabric challenge. The challenge required at least 3 fabrics from a selection of 6 colors; no other fabrics could be used. The designs were cut using a laser cutter. The applique uses fusible and raw edges.

1202 Beautiful Botanicals, Pat Kidd

A hand appliqued quilt of various types of flowers. It has a faintly folkloric feel.

1203 Heavenly Rainbow, Sue Bartlow

This quilt was made as a commission/barter for a fly fishing friend. He provided the photo and color scheme and I made it happen. Unfortunately he passed away suddenly while on a fishing trip in Montana and never received it.

1204 The Library in my Mind, DeeDee Morton

Inspired design for Madison Station Guild challenge based on the game "Clue."  I picked Library and appliqued favorite quotes on appropriate fabrics and patterns. My mind was instantly flooded with favorite quotes and titles of books. The problem was limiting my choices and choosing fabrics and quilt blocks. I used the six-inch blocks in Jennifer Chiaverini's sampler books: Fan, Bridal Bouquet, Contrary Husband, and Rosebud from Sylvia's Bridal Sampler; Prairie Flower from Harriet's Journey; and A House Divided from The Loyal Union Sampler. Fabric celebrating Mark Twain helped with many quotes. My son gave me the SHAEF (Supreme Headquarters Allied Expeditionary Force) badge. It is next to my block for the 101st Airborne and represents my World War II collection. The mountain fabric represents my home state of Colorado and is the base of many quotes.

1205 Morris, Barbara Carlson

Morris has such a charming personality that the moths flying around seemed like a perfect addition to the quilt. I'm not particularly fond of moths - but I was dazzled by the fabric design that captured their beauty. It makes me happy when people see one of my quilts and want to have a conversation with the individual who is looking at them. What would Morris say?

1206 Swimming in the sea, Cheryl Heeth

This is a Cherrywood Abyss Challenge. I fell in love with the turtle and found myself focused on him. I continued adding other creatures. My niece was a diver and sent me pictures to see the sea bottom.

1301 The President’s Bee Quilt August 2025, Joan Bloomberg

This Quilt presented by her Board 2024-25 was designed, executed, quilted and finished by Elaine Wick Poplin. It is Y-seamed, pieced with hand embroidery and sparkles! The Board members made the bee body with their favorite quilting colors. Elaine's gift in creativity and design built the bee idea into a magnificent quilt! I will cherish my year as President with a forever quilt from the Board! Joan Bloomberg. Board: Elaine Wick Poplin, Janice Hoffman, Ben Darby, Linda Lee, DeeDee Morton, Tammy Replogle, Eileen Whaley, Helen Matter, Laura Patrick, Kirsten Kennedy, Pat Vittitow, Renee Kilpatrick, Vangie Patrick, Kimberly Heath, Donna Daniel, Joan Adams, Nancy Franks, Kari Hawkins. All incredible talents! Thank you.

1302 Sylvia’s Saga, Suzie Wilbanks

Sylvia spoke to me. I think I like sampler quilts because each block is a "finish.” There are 140 blocks in this quilt, and each one is special. I can't choose my favorite. Another thing about samplers is that you don't get bored because each block is something different. I made this quilt as a block of the month so I could pace myself and not lose sight of the project. I love the colors in this quilt, they speak peace to me. I had "Sylvia" custom quilted by Robin Price and Patty Wilson. This quilt took a long time to finish and quilt, just trying to get the perfect quilting motifs for each block. The border is spectacular and I'm very fortunate to have such a lovely quilt and memory.

1303 Cat Therapy 101, Vangie Patrick

My love for cats encouraged me to go down this trail of doing this cat quilt. I found a picture of a cat in a coloring  book that appealed to me for a quilt. My husband, Allen, designed it to block size. I chose bright happy colors. For the backing Allen designed a large size cat to make the whole back. This was a fun project with my husband. Allen did the size calculations and I did the sewing.

1304 Flower Pot Block Swap, Sam Swieszcz

In 2023 our Stitchers Etc. group decided to do a block swap. Each participant made at least 15 blocks to trade. The rules were simple.  Use a neutral background fabric with a flower in a pot. Our block swap day in 2024 is a fun memory!  We had 30 seconds to pick our favorite out of each stack. Lots of laughter. Now I have a little bit of sunshine to add to my bed every Spring.

1305 MAY 10, Barbara Barnett

Scrappy quilt with on-point squares sashed with piano keys and a wide border. Susan Yell pieced this quilt top and sold it at the last HQH show to me! I absolutely love it and decided that we would enter together. I found the perfect binding fabric so that was my job and Sherri Spivey did the quilting. Susan and I are both born on May 10, thus the title.

1306 Friends Connie Beveridge

A block exchange with my dear friends, Susan Dunbar and Lin Hayden, expanded the fabric palette in the center of the quilt. Each person created their own setting and border design.

1307 Garden of Flowers, Pat Vittitow

In 2023 our Stitchers Etc group decided to do a block swap. Each participant made at least 15 blocks to trade. The rules were simple. Use a neutral background fabric with a flower in a pot. Each Flower Pot block maker used either her own original design or inspired design. Our block swap day in 2024 is a fun memory! We had 30 seconds to pick our favorite out of each stack. Lots of laughter. This looks like a garden of flowers. Based on a quilt made by Judi Hollingsworth.

1308 Two Hearts Become One, April Goss

This quilt was a wedding gift for my youngest son and new daughter-in-law. Suzie, using EQ8, adapted the quilt pattern from "The Storm at Sea" for paper piecing. We sewed the quilt like an old fashioned quilting bee, and finished it in a few weeks. My son and daughter-in-law will be enjoying this quilt as a memory of their wedding day and the nine wonderful ladies who helped make it a special gift.

1309 Ornamental, Nicole Morris

I chose this pattern for a block exchange with my Sisters in Stitches. It was my month to chose a block for my Sisters in Stitches to make for me. I always love to see what I get back. Fun pattern and, of course, lots of space for quilting! I love the darker background.

1401 Be Still, My Soul, Christopher Smith

Original design illustration of the hymn "Be Still, My Soul" via 18 photos matched with corresponding lyric couplets, which are hand-inked in Old English lettering. Title is hand cross-stitched with 3,339 stitches, including gold embellishments. Bible verse is embedded in the quilting via gold thread, with the Scripture reference in silver. Binding is matched to the border.

1402 Spools of Fun!, Lorrie Brown

This is a group block exchange with the Athens Friendship Quilt Guild. Any spool design was acceptable, as long as it was a 13” finished block. We traded these last January in 2024. I added the Selvage spools along the border and 4 special paper pieced notions blocks in the corners.  21 blocks from other members.  I added the 4 corner spool blocks on the front to tie it together. Those I couldn’t fit on the front are in the center of the backing, including the names of all of those who participated. It was a fun quilt to make.

1403 Chantecler, Vangie Patrick

The quilt has raw edge appliqued blocks done in reds, blacks, whites and yellows. The backing is old feed sacks salvaged from antique shops.

1404 Betty’s Garden, Mary Ann Matson

Betty Holloway was one of my mom's best friends that truly helped me on my quilting journey. I went to Paducah with her year after year until she became too ill.  We would retreat together in Florida and had a grand time every summer. This was one of Betty's last quilts that she made and I was lucky enough to help her. She has since passed away. She is truly missed but I wanted to show off her needle turned applique one more time.

1405 Welcome to the North Pole, Kirsten Kennedy

Whimsical hand dyed wool applique on cotton with lots of fun buttons celebrating the season with elves, candy, gingerbread, toy shop and Santa. The best set of ladies in the world cheered me on making this quilt. Laura, Judy, Nonda, Susan, Teri, Linda, Jodi, Karen and Trish all advised, coached, encouraged and cajoled me when I needed inspiration. Hand dyed unique wool colors are what makes this whimsical pattern from Vickie Higley so fun. I hand appliqued and hand embroidered using as many different stitches as possible, learning more techniques along the way. Nonda Sloan provided the perfect background fabric and even pieced the blocks together for me. This quilt was joyous to make, and I hope provide happiness to everyone who sees it.

1501 Wise Woman Watching, Barbara Carlson

When a face captures my attention, I like to use fabric to capture the personality of the person who is portrayed in the photo. In this quilt I had the additional challenge of capturing the feeling of the scarf by making it dimensional.

1502 Drought, Claire Whitmore

Designed in the Aboriginal style with 360 pieces depicting the merciless sun in the Australian Outback. Made for the Guild Challenge - Red Hot Read and based on the book, The Dry by Jane Harper. I used 10 fabrics in shades of red and sometimes used the reverse side plus using red ink on white fabric. Design on the back side shows all the fabrics used in their original state.

1503 Elephant Sanctuary, Jean Clement

The HQH 2025 Challenge “Red Hot Read” had two primary requirements which were 1) the quilt had to be based on a book and 2) all fabrics in the quilt had to be predominantly red. I loved the book “Leaving Time” by Jodi Picoult which focuses on events occurring in an elephant sanctuary. The book has scenes involving a mama and baby elephant so I decided to depict them in my quilt. I really enjoyed this challenge and definitely pushed myself out of my comfort zone.

1504 Change, Transformation, and Hope, Sue Bartlow

This quilt was created for the 2023 Cherrywood Fabrics Challenge, and the theme—Monarch Butterflies—immediately sparked something powerful for me! It brought to mind the incredible APAC prison program in Costa Rica, where inmates spend their final two years preparing for a fresh start. Through Bible study, work programs, and learning new skills, these men truly transform. One of the most inspiring things they do is raise butterflies to help restore the ecosystem. Just like monarchs move from egg to caterpillar to cocoon to stunning butterfly, the men at APAC undergo their own remarkable metamorphosis. It’s a story of hope, renewal, and second chances—and it inspired every stitch of this quilt!

1505 Rappelling the Neversink, Diane Knoblauch

Collage quilt depicting the view on the Neversink Sinkhole from the bottom looking up.

This quilt reflects a personal inner journey- a passage through layers of experience, memory and uncertainty. The cavern-like space, built from deeply textured fabrics, suggests places I have moved through emotionally as much as physically. The light at the center represents moments of clarity and hope, hard-won and luminous against the surrounding darkness. The small figures suspended within the space feel like versions of myself- hesitant, searching and brave- navigating the unknown. Through stitching and layered cloth, the work becomes a record of descent and emergence, honoring the quiet courage it takes to keep moving toward the light.  Photo credit- Kelly Smallwood.

1506 Across the Pond, Sally Wright

Remember the old Iphone Koi Pond app? The interactive scene of fish swimming in a pond with lily pads and lotuses is recreated here in silk dupioni, free motion quilted in silk thread and highlighted with textile paints. The background quilting was inspired by a free motion quilting class with Bethanne Nemesh of White Arbor Quilting. Machine appliqued silk Japanese koi swim on a silk dupioni ground free motion quilted in silk and highlighted with textile paints.

1507 Invitation: Monarch Garden Party, Margo Monks

This was a Cherrywood Challenge piece, "Saving the Monarch Butterflies," completed in 2023 and was exhibited in the 2024 Cherrywood traveling exhibition.  There were 8 preselected fabrics to  be used in the Monarch quilt. The research, my love of gardening, and rides in the countryside as a child, inspired my final design.

1508 Queen Letisha, Teresa Covington

A challenge was issued in my Art Group to use just one fabric (in my case a half yard; in other cases, a fat quarter) to make a face. Cutting the floral fabric along the rippling leafy edges helped in naming my lady.

1509 A Tree Grows in Brooklyn – A Red Read Quilt 2025

Based on a Challenge from HQH: read a book and create a quilt all in shades of red. I used piecing, cording, applique of blocks. The quilting was free motion, machine based. This book is the coming of age of Francie Nolan, an Irish immigrant family in NYC. It was written in 1943, by Betty Smith, the book begins in 1903. The main metaphor is the tree which grows in Brooklyn surrounded by concrete, the Ailanthus altissima, the tree of heaven. The tree was actually burned down at one time and still it grew. The coming of age, working in an adult world at age 14, although she declares she is 16, she wears nylons - thus, the tree has sari silk bows as its leaves.  The leaves are more sparse due to the damage inflicted upon the tree and still it grows.  Hope. Always there is hope. My own maternal side is Scot-Irish/English. I was greatly blessed by reading this book. I hope you will read or re-read it, too.

1510 Monarch Beauty, Cheryl Heeth

This was a Cherrywood Fabric challenge for 2023. With the Monarch Butterflies  placed on the endangered list, this is the quilt I designed. I had a fun time designing a quilt to honor both my Mother and Mother-in-law who love butterflies.

1601 Floating Kites, Barbara Barnett

I love making scrappy string blocks and usually set them in a square pattern. This time I wanted irregular diamond  “kite” shapes of different sizes floating on the wind. Terry Owen did a fabulous job with diagonal quilting to give movement to this quilt. I love it!

1602 Windswept, Nicole Morris

I created this sample for Natalie Barnes/Beyond The Reef Patterns look book for her "Our House" Line for Windham Fabrics. Love the bright colors and low volume prints in this line. The pattern leaves plenty of space to play with free motion and ruler quilting. I also taught this pattern as a curved piecing class at Quilting Delights. We had a lot of fun in the class and everyone finished!

1603 Miami Meets Manhattan, Ben Darby

When Giucy Giuce's Deco Glo II fabric line was announced, I wanted to make a quilt to highlight the color gradient in the collection. I pondered variations of New York Beauty blocks, with a dark background in min. Around this time, we made a visit to Miami Beach and went on a walking tour of Art Deco architecture. I spotted an arch-shaped ornament on a building there, and the idea struck me to merge the New York Beauty spikes into a tall arch shape and assemble the shapes in a clamshell type quilt. I drafted the design using computer software, and made custom acrylic templates using a laser cutter.

1604 Happy 30th Birthday to My Son!, Kari Hawkins

Found the book Beautiful Building Block Quilts by accident during a shopping trip to Patches and Stitches Quilt Shop. I thought my son would like the geometric designs, and he might like to pick a design out of this book for his 30th birthday quilt. He did, but I didn't think he would pick out a purple quilt of triangles! I added a bit of blue and green to his purple, black, gray and white color palette, just to spice it up a bit. Two borders were added to make it larger for his bed. I was especially happy with finding the last border fabric! Most of the fabrics are Batiks, with a few others throw in. The flame quilting design for the triangles was chosen because it seemed manly. All the orphan blocks were used on the back.

1605 Wonder Blooms, Kathy Murray

This is a One Block Wonder using a pre-printed floral panel. Quilted in a gold thread to highlight the gold metallic fabric. I designed this quilt using a pre-printed fabric panel that reminded me of a watercolor painting. Using a color wave flowing across the quilt gives it depth and interest.

1606 American Strawberry, Evelyn Spaulding

In 2023, visited Japan with Quilt Party Journeys. At Yoko Sito's store, Quilt Party, I bought a fabric bundle and a picture book of her work. Strawberry Garden inspired this project. I used the translate function on my phone to interpret names, etc. Yoko came to the shop when we visited. Susan K. Cleveland was our guide as we traveled through Japan.

1701 Trees Among the Trees, Joan Bloomberg

Pattern from a book called “Those Trees” by Zen Chic. I wanted a Christmas Winter quilt. All winter in the South with snow. Lots of negative space quilted with more trees. Wool batting.

1702 Stellar Translucence, Cheryl Heeth

Stellar Translucence is a brightly colored star radiating from intense color to soft hues of the same. It is a foundation paper pieced (fpp) project that gives a modern take on a traditional star.

1703 Improv #3, Sally Wright

An improv pieced quilt, using principles learned in a class with the great Irene Roderick. The use of stark modern lines of the piecing contrasting with the traditional free motion quilted designs intrigued me. Made with Cherrywood Hand dyed cottons.

1704 Lady of Hope, Mary Ann Richards

"Lady of Hope" is a paper pieced pattern of New York Beauty by Nancy Roelfsema. The quilt reminds me of our Statue of Liberty in New York harbor. The bright colors mixed with the deep blues make me think of the city at sunset with the dark water surrounding Liberty Island.

1705 MonoCRUMBatic, Elaine Poplin

Using up more scraps, I made “crumb” blocks with tiny pieces in similar colorways. Why did the pile get bigger instead of smaller?! The checkerboard border and outer triangles are a gradation because I didn’t have enough of any one of the grey fabrics to do them all the same color, but then I liked the effect of the light-to-dark arrangement better anyway.

1706 Mosaic Musings, Ben Darby

The blocks in this quilt are based on the logo used by First Baptist Church of Huntsville. The church uses various colorways of the logo depending on context, one for general use and others associated with specific ministries. I tried to incorporate each of these colorways, and also added some variations of my own.

1707 Love Potion Number 9, Janice Hoffman

Fun modern quilt consisting of many small nine patches.

1708 Firefly, Cindy McAlister

Illusion quilts are very interesting and I always wanted to do one.

1801 Kaleidoscope Garden, Judy Ballance

This quilt uses vibrant colors, intricate curved piecing, wool appliqué, and hand embellished embroidery stitches. The quilt evokes looking through a kaleidoscope at a magical garden. On the edges of the quilt darker fabrics were used to create a border. I love to do a combination of wool, cotton and hand embroidery to give my quilts a dimensional look.

1802 Bee Humble Cindy McAlister

Bee Humble by Vicki McCarty. Wool, machine pieced.

1803 Buttermold Sampler, Karen Measels

These blocks were created from designs found on antique butter molds. Who knew there were at least this many butter molds? The buttermilk mold patterns were fun to make and find all the right colors. I think the quilting on this set off the blocks perfectly.

Category 1900: Wool - Small

1901 Only 5 Pretty Little Pots, Donna Daniel

I was intrigued with wool appliqué and thought these little pots would be a great way to practice my wool appliqué and embroidery skills. I love the simplicity of these little pots and enjoyed my wool appliqué experience.

1902 Tweet Home Alabama, Kari Hawkins

A barn wall filled with colorful birdhouses of all kinds! Birds and birdhouses have always fascinated me! When I saw this pattern of birdhouses designed in wool and wonderfully embellished, I just had to make it for myself! Wool and embroidery are new quilt passions for me. I loved discovering different stitches with this project. Although it follows a pattern, I've added a few of my own touches, including the addition of three colorful birds, a few different stitching designs and a new sign name -- Tweet Home Alabama!

1903 Mary Jo’s Penny Path, Jerry Alexandria

I was embroidering these pennies while my sister, Mary Jo, the butterfly, lay dying of melanoma in December 2018. She died on Christmas Eve. The pennies are her garden of flowers.

1904 The Neighborhood, Trish Harmon

Originally a Block of the Month from Sue Spargo. She will publish the pattern a couple of years later. I bought the book and went to work! Wool and cotton fabric. All hand embroidered. Patty Wilson did the quilting. So thrilled about how it turned out!

1905 Ocean Reef, Judy Ballance

This is a sea life quilt made with wool, velvet and woven sea creatures and shells on a wool background. This quilt is heavily embellished by hand embroidery, sequins, beads, and woven and purchased trims. I used looms to weave the shells and sea urchins and free motion embroidery for  some of the sea weed.

1906 Summertime, Audra Kennedy

I spent many summers on my MawMaw's farm and this quilt makes me think of those wonderful times. I had to change one block and add chickens in honor of her. I also love adding embroidery stitches and using different types of threads. Wool appliqué is one of my favorite techniques because of the versatility and the chance to use embroidery embellishments.

1907 Pumpkin Village, Kirsten Kennedy

Hand dyed wool adds depth and complexity to this quilt. Hand applique and hand embroidered with mostly variegated threads. I designed one block, "Toy Shop," and the other blocks were designed by 11 other designers as part of the Pumpkin Village Stitch along.

1908 Autumn in Wool, Anna Hawkins

My mom got me started with embroidery a few years ago and I ended up enjoying it so much that when we saw this quilt pattern at the Houston International Quilt Festival in 2023, I thought the pumpkins and flowers and autumn animals were so cute I just had to make it. It was a little intimidating because not only had I never worked with wool before, I'd never even made a quilt. But I made a block per month over the course of a year and I had so much fun with them that I totally forgot to be intimated until I got to the end and had to piece and quilt everything together!

Category 2000: Hand Embroidery Any Size

2001 Jaye’s Bouquet Quilt, Linda Lee

A colorful quilt of pieced and hand embroidered blocks on a low volume set of fabrics that allow the colorful fabric and handwork to really pop. The intricate quilting makes the handwork really pop.

2002 Dance by the Light of the Moon, John Pritchard

This quilt is crayon colored, hand embordered. The material choice was chosen to emulate a fog.

2003 The Quilt Maker, April Goss

The cross stitch pattern was done by my best friend Patty after I saw it several years before. I matched her work with Thimbleberry fabrics to make into a quilt to hang on the wall instead of just framing the finished cross stitch.  It is a reminder of creating and sewing dreams, quilting with my daughter, and memories of friends over the years.

2004 Night Before Christmas, Karen Measels

This pattern appealed to me because I like embroidery, applique, and Christmas! It was fun to jazz it up with crystals and lots of holiday type fabrics.

2005 Birds ‘n’ Roses, Pat Kidd

This is a hand embroidered garden quilt design. It is inspired from real birds and flowers.

2006 Welcome Home, Patti Osment

This is only my second hand embroidery project. It was a good project to work on as I comforted my elderly dog in the evenings. I thank Dusty for giving me the patience to sit and finish the blocks, our time together makes the quilt more special.

2103 Follow the Star, Sharon Rush

This quilt features a center Mariner’s Compass and machine embroidered hexagons that mimic ship portholes framing beautiful stars. The entire quilt is quilted in the hoop on my single needle embroidery machine. The design layout was inspired by a manhole cover.

2201 Rainbow thru the Pines, Pam Anders

This colorful quilt has been quite the challenge. Each of the tiny trees are less than 2 inches and are paper pieced. I have worked on this quilt on and off for several years. This is the year I was determined to get it finished. I am looking forward to finally hanging it in my home!

2202 Happy Halloween, John Pritchard

This wall hanging is a crayon color tinted embordered quilt. This was originally designed to teach the crayon color tinting process.

2302 Special Delivery Over the Rooftops, Kari Hawkins

Whimsical applique and sparkly thread are just right for recreating Santa's nighttime flight over the rooftops of children around the world to make special deliveries. This pattern was in my to-do pile for about two years before I decided in November 2024 that I wanted to make this to hang in my living room. Although there is a huge tree in the living room with hundreds of ornaments and a few Christmasy decorations on the tables, there was not a Christmas quilt hanging in this very special room. Once I started working on it, I couldn't stop! The collage applique technique was so very addictive. I thoroughly enjoyed creating and placing the mountains and trees, Santa and his reindeer, the houses and people, and all the other Christmasy things featured on this quilt. The best part is that I was able to complete it by early December in time for my family to enjoy for Christmas 2024 and for many more to come!

2303 Come!, Diane Knoblauch

This quilt is inspired by watching my granddaughter at play- curious, joyful and fully immersed in her own imaginative world. As she perks around the tree, her posture captures a moment of discovery and quiet confidence, when play becomes exploration. The shadow figures running and hiding around her symbolize imagination and memory, and the unseen layers of childhood. They echo invented games, past selves, and the way children move effortlessly between what is real and what is imagined. Through layered fabric and expressive stitching, the quilt reflects the wonder of childhood and the tenderness of witnessing it unfold.

2304 Elder Grace, Barbara Carlson

I believe Elder Grace is a magic fairy living at the edge of the woods and acting as hostess for lovely celebrations. Do you agree? Actually the fabric that inspired this design was a fabric panel that most quilters would make into place mats. But I saw the lovely round pumpkins and gourds and thought they would make a happy face. An interesting challenge - but fun.

2305 Flora and Fauna, Audra Kennedy

This collage quilt design by Emily Taylor was inspired by her trip to Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania. It reminds me of many botanical gardens I have visited viewing nature and soaking up the beauty of the flora and fauna. I love collage because it is like painting with fabric and thread. It allows my creative juices to flow. I followed a pattern but the artistic freedom is all mine.

2306 Self Portrait, Pam Dean

A self portrait Challenge in 2024 for the Madison Station Quilt Guild Challenge. Used fusible appliqué technique and Ink Tense pencils for the face. Quilted on my home machine. Took a selfie and used a photo as a guide.

2401 The Quilt That Should Not Be, Julie Anderson

A return to quilting for me. Class with Barbara Black where I learned many new techniques, including paper piecing and turned edge applique.

2402 Helen’s Christmas Adventure, Helen Cordier

I wanted to use this line of fabric that I collected to create my own colorway. Since this was my first Quiltworx pattern it was truly an adventure in color and techniques. This quilt satisfied my desire for a Christmas quilt and to use a large portion of my stash. I purchased a digital pattern and I used that to quilt it. This quilt just makes me happy.

2403 Greek Game Board, Anna Hawkins

I made this quilt as part of the 2024 Murder Mystery Quilt block of the month. Each month, we received a pattern for a new block along with an accompanying chapter of a murder mystery book. The final design remained a mystery until the end, but it was fun to make the blocks every month and take guesses about how they might fit together, and to try to solve the murder mystery at the same time. The overall design is inspired by the ancient Knossos game board, and the designers included the rules to a simple board game that can be played using the quilt itself as the board. Given the ancient Greek influence in the quilt, I hand-quilted various symbols relating to several of the ancient Greek gods and goddesses in the border around the central medallion. Zeus, Poseidon, Athena, Hera, Demeter, Persephone, and Hades are all represented, among others.

2501 Super Bloom, Pam Dean

A happy quilt with 4 Blue Star Blocks surrounding the center block and 4 corner blocks.

2502 Auntie M’s Trellis, Dianne Pansing

This is machine pieced and appliquéd scrappy quilt. It contains  rows of raw edged flowers, appliquéd vines on 1/4 square triangle blocks. 1/4 square blocks in various blues are set on point for alternating rows. After a blue 1” border, a row of raw edged flowers and lighter 1/4 square on point make up the outer border. A smaller print flower fabric makes up the back.

2503 Simply Woven, Eileen Whaley

This quilt uses blacks, greys, and tans that are set with a cream-colored background. The quilt was made with jelly rolls and a solid light-colored fabric for the background. This quilt is actually a variation of the Simply Woven pattern. It uses the same blocks as the pattern but includes a 2 ½” wide sashing around each of the blocks. The binding is the same fabric as the backing used for this quilt.

2504 The Goodnight Star, Melody Janssen

This paper piecing pattern was designed by Judy and Bradley Niemeyer. It features dramatic black and white squares to highlight the high contrast lone star pattern. The fabric used was Free Spirit True Colors by Tula Pink.

2505 Bountiful Harvest, Karen Leicht

This little quilt epitomizes fall. With the fall colors and variety of squares it reminds me of New England in the fall. The colors remind me of a lawn blanketed in fall foliage. Along with the little and large baskets and flowers it evokes fall memories.

2506 Kalaidoscope, Terri Taylor

I am a member of the Sunday Sew and Sews Stitcher’s Group, lead by Barbara Black (Local and Traveling Quilt Instructor).  The group chose 2019 The Quilt Show’s Block of the Month as their yearly project. Each member could make their quilt from one of the kits sold by TQS or choose their own fabrics. I chose to work with my own fabrics and had the best time!!! We worked on our quilts individually at home and then we would meet the first Sunday of each month. Each month we would have Show n’Tell, discussion and technique demonstrations, and growth of Quilting Friendships!  Most of my quilt was completed in 2019 but then “Life Happened” and it was put away for several years.  Patty Wilson with SewN2U Longarm Quilting performed her magic in 2025. I plan final completion for end of 2025 to early 2026.

2507 Message in a Bottle, Sheree Black

Message in a Bottle taught by Kari Hawkins at Southern Charm Quilting. I resized some bottles in order to put a scripture in each bottle.

2508 LeMiel , Nicole Morris

In 2023 I organized a mystery quilt and this was my example. 20+ people completed the top, including  some beginners, and I was blessed to quilt several of them. I created most of the motifs for the quilting on mine.

2601 Feather My Vest, Sally Wright

This vest of Burma silk was made from a sewing pattern from Allison's Designs. The   twining feathers were traced from her design and free motion quilted. The background patterns are from my own designs influenced by the work and a class taken from Bethanne Nemesh of White Arbor Quiting. All the quilting was done free motion on a domestic machine in silk thread.

2602 Crazy Quilted Jacket, Pam Anders

This jacket is made from crazy pieced fabrics, then I had fun stitching traditional crazy quilt designs on the seams. I added beads and a few charms to the design also. I had read a book that the character had enjoyed this type of quilting and it inspired me to make this jacket.

2603 Blooming Nine Patch, Cheryl Heeth

I took a quilting coarse at Ollie (Osher Life Long Learning Institute, University of Alabama- Huntsville). We all had the same pattern but we got to choose our fabric. I started working on it one day, because I was challenged to finish a UFO. It was fun to work on. After the top was completed I was happy with the way it looked.

2604 Whee Times Three, Diane Knoblauch

Collage quilt depicting playground fun with my granddaughters. Remembering the fun and joy of our youth, this quilt depicts my two oldest granddaughters showing their baby sister the fun and excitement of going down the playground slide. Whee! Here we go!

2605 Wale of a Quilt, Ben Darby

This quilt was inspired by the quilts of Gee's Bend. In a visit to their inaugural Airing of the Quilts Festival, I learned about the history of the area's sewing cooperative which contracted with Sears Roebuck to produce corduroy pillow covers -- and how the women were allowed to take scraps of the corduroy home, which naturally ended up in quilts. I took a class on hand quilting from Jen Kingwell at QuiltCon just for the purposes of this quilt.

2606 Christmas Past, John Pritchard

This was a rework quilt that I modified to be a crayon color tinted in order to give it a little pop factor. I chose DMC floss to accent the color of the old year Santas. I change the blocks to be that of a compass star block to symbolize Santa on his journeys.

2607 PATRICIA’S AFRICA, Barbara Barnett

What does one do with gorgeous authentic African design fabric?  Well, you find someone born in Africa, make a quilt and gift it to them. This is what happened to me. I was bequeathed squares of this fabric and discovered that Patricia was born in Liberia. She is a friend from the Wellness Center and does so much for those who come there that it was natural she should have it.

2608 Sew Lovely In Love, Jerry Alexandria

"May the thistle and the rose grow together in harmony." It started with the border and my stash.

2609 Ruby Red Dots, Karen Measels

The creator of this pattern sketched each block as she traveled. She explains why she designed each block in her pattern book. After all 12 blocks were designed, she realized they had some things in common - red and lots of dots.

2610 He loves me, He loves me not, Kari Hawkins

I fell in love with the Pick A Petal quilt designed by Jen Kingwell and featured as the 2025 Block of the Month quilt on TheQuiltShow.com. Several of my friends also loved the quilt and asked me to teach a class based on the quilt. After setting the class dates, I had to hurry, hurry, hurry to get the quilt top done! It was completed just a couple weeks before the five-week class began. It was rewarding for me to teach the class. Toward the end of our class, I decided to do Big Stitch hand quilting on it using Perle Cotton 12 Weight thread, much like Jen Kingwell's quilt.

2611 Therse No Place Like HOME, Jill Johnson

This was Fat Quarter Shop Block of the Month 2024 quilt pattern with each month produced by a different designer. The Moda fabric was beautiful so I took the chance. I love how the final settings were a house shape.  It makes me happy with the pastel colors.

2612 Chromatic Beauty, Rhoda Johnson

Chromatic Beauty is a beautiful quilt made with Gelato bright ombre fabrics. Blues, greens, oranges and purple stand out strikingly against a black background. Pieced by Rhoda Johnson and free motion quilted by Rhoda in stunning blues, reds, and greens.

2613 Lost Socks, Nicole Morris

Short Description: In 2014, my EZ Quilter friendship group did a block exchange. I finally completed it in 2023 by adding  blocks for missing socks and special border.

Long Description: In 2014, my EZ Quilter friendship group did a block exchange. I finally completed it in 2023 by adding blocks for missing socks and an extended border that allowed me to play with custom long arm quilting motifs.
